LYNWOOD >> A man and a woman were killed Monday moing when their vehicle drove off the 710 Freeway and struck a tree in Lynwood, authorities said.
The crash was reported at 4:42 a.m. off the northbound 710 Freeway just south of Imperial Highway, said Califoia Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt.
Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Brandt said. Firefighters were working to extricate the bodies from the vehicle.
An investigation was underway to determine the cause of the crash, he said.

MONTEREY PARK >> A memorial service for Mexican music superstar Juan Gabriel is scheduled for Tuesday at a Catholic Church in Monterey Park.
The service is set for 5 to 9 p.m. at St. Stephen Martyr Catholic Church, 320 W. Garvey Ave.
Gabriel, 66, whose inteational popularity spaed multiple generations, died of a heart attack Aug. 27 at his home in Santa Monica.
He was known for his powerful ballads and a commanding stage presence punctuated by often-flamboyant costumes.
His death came less than three days after he performed a two-hour set at the Los Angeles Forum as part of his sold-out “MeXXico Es Todo Tour.”
Gabriel, whose real name was Alberto Aquilera Valadez, wrote more than 1,500 songs that combined mariachi, ranchero and norteno. He sold more than 100 million copies worldwide in a career dating back to the 1970s.

NORFOLK, Va. >> Hermine continued Monday to twist hundreds of miles off shore in the Atlantic Ocean and was expected to keep swimmers and surfers out of beach waters because of its dangerous waves and rip currents on the last day of the long holiday weekend.

Carson Mayor Albert Robles, who is defiantly seeking election to two offices that the District Attoey’s Office says he can’t hold simultaneously, is embroiled in a web of new lawsuits related to the November election.
Robles, a defense attoey, faces only former City Clerk Jim Dear in his bid for his first full term as Carson mayor, but has four challengers in the race for his longtime seat representing a larger region at the Water Replenishment District of Southe Califoia, an agency that manages groundwater. Both elections are Nov. 8.
Most of the suits involve challenges to the three-word ballot designations chosen by the candidates to describe who they are, which can be crucial in deciding elections to obscure offices because voters know so little about them.

The sound of applause has scarcely died down in the Capitol after last week’s vote to significantly expand Califoia’s requirements to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Proponents who steered the groundbreaking legislation are still basking in the afterglow of an effort that—after seeming on the brink of defeat—deftly mustered unexpected support and reaffirmed the state’s inteational leadership on climate change.

STINSON BEACH >> The sleek, flapping salmon that fishermen hauled aboard the rolling Salty Lady charter boat near the Golden Gate Bridge were the survivors of the survivors.
After five years of drought, the native Chinook salmon that the men were reeling in this past week were there only because state and federal agencies have stepped in to do much of the salmon-raising that Califoia’s overtapped rivers once did. A “felony stop” in front of a Los Angeles Inteational Airport terminal Sunday netted three auto theft suspects and forced the evacuation of an entire terminal as a security precaution, authorities said.
People either ran or were escorted out of the terminal onto a tarmac at Terminal 3, said airport spokeswoman Mary Grady.
“Some people got over-conceed and went onto the tarmac,” Grady said. She was not sure if police had directed people to the tarmac.
“The situation was and is quite dynamic, and we are still putting together exact details,” she said. “The bottom line is that we evacuated the entire terminal.”
Officer Rob Pedregon of the Los Angeles Airport Police Department said the incident occurred about 9 a.m. and, in an effort to control the crime scene as well as the public’s safety, officers ushered people off the sidewalks and back into the terminal.

LOS ANGELES >> The music manager who helped introduce N.W.A to the masses has died. Jerry Heller was 75 years old.
Heller’s cousin, Gary Ballen, says Heller died Friday night at a hospital in Thousand Oaks after suffering a heart attack while driving earlier in the day.
Heller co-founded Ruthless Records with Eazy-E, which released N.W.A’s seminal album “Straight Outta Compton” in 1988, launching the West Coast gangsta rap movement. Ruthless was also behind such artists as J.J. Fad, Michel’le and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.
Actor Paul Giamatti played the veteran music manager in last year’s hit film “Straight Outta Compton.” Heller sued the film’s producers for defamation after its release, claiming it portrayed him as a villain.

DEKLE BEACH, Fla. >> Tropical Storm Hermine was intensifying Saturday as it moved slowly up the Atlantic Coast with heavy rains, wind and storm surges making a mess of the holiday.
Hermine (her-MEEN) already caused 2 deaths, damaged homes and businesses and left hundreds of thousands without electricity from Florida to Virginia.
“This is not a beach weekend for anyone in the Mid-Atlantic to the northeast,” said Eric Blake, a hurricane specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.
At 2 p.m. Saturday, Hermine was centered 90 miles east of Duck, North Carolina, with top sustained winds of 70 mph (110 kph), moving east at 10 mph (17 kph).
Tropical Storm Waings were in effect as far north as Coecticut, with dangerous storm surge expected along the coast from Virginia to New Jersey. Goveors all along the coast aounced emergency preparations.
Hermine rose up over the Gulf of Mexico as a Category 1 hurricane, hitting Florida and then crossing over Georgia on Friday.

Thousands of Califoia’s foster care kids may be overdrugged with psychotropic medications, often without medical follow-up or a legally required approval from a judge or parent, according to a stinging report by the Califoia State Auditor.
“The state and counties have failed to adequately oversee the prescribing of these medications,” wrote auditor Elaine M. Howle.
The long-awaited report, released in August by State Auditor Elaine Howle, mirrors many findings of Bay Area News Group’s investigative series “Drugging Our Kids.” Those stories, which appeared in Southe Califoia News Group publications, including this one, highlighted how only 10 percent of the state’s 1,280 highest prescribers were responsible about 50 percent of the time a foster child was given an antipsychotic, one of the most powerful classes of psychiatric drugs.

A group of students at Rim of the World High School in Lake Arrowhead have created a stir for displaying Confederate flags, staked into the beds of their pickup trucks, in the school parking lot.
On Friday, two Ford pickups, parked side-by-side, sat parked in the school parking lot, one Confederate flag and one American flag displayed in the bed of each truck. The black pickup also sported stickers from Patriot Alliance, an online retailer of clothing, National Rifle Association, and Donald Trump campaign signs.
Also on Friday, Ruing Springs resident Jeifer Celise-Reyes, whose daughter began her freshman year at the high school last month, said she sent emails to school board president Cindy Gardner, school district Superintendent Giovai H. Aous, and the ACLU expressing her ire over the issue.

Rishi Sharma is hoping local veterans will help him with his mission to interview combat veterans of World War II.
The 18-year-old Aguora Hills resident has completed more than 100 interviews and is shifting his attention to the Inland Empire. The recent high school graduate has decided to defer his college education so that he can conduct daily interviews.
“When I first started, I was an armchair historian about WWII. I knew more than the average person, but delving into this, there’s an amazing amount of raw information,” he said. “After each interview, the picture becomes slightly more clearer of what they faced.”
Through his nonprofit, Heroes of the Second World War, Sharma is conducting about one interview a day. The teen will provide the veteran with a DVD, giving them all the rights to the interview, he said.

HOLLYWOOD — Rock’s top-selling duo Daryl Hall and John Oates were honored with the 2,587th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame today.

Music executive Jerry Greenberg joined Hall and Oates in speaking at the 11:30 a.m. ceremony in front of the Musicians Institute on Hollywood Boulevard.
Hall and Oates formed their partnership in 1972, going on to record 21 albums, which have sold more than 80 million copies. They were recognized as rock’s all-time top selling duo in 1987 by the music industry trade organization the Recording Industry Association of America, a distinction they still hold.
From the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, they had six No. 1 singles -- “Rich Girl,” “Kiss on My List,” “Private Eyes,” “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do),” “Maneater” and “Out of Touch.”

FlyAway airport shuttle service between LAX and Santa Monica will be discontinued immediately after Labor Day weekend.
The Santa Monica service will stop ruing at midnight on Tuesday.
Airport commissioners voted earlier this summer to end service for the Santa Monica route due to low ridership, according to Los Angeles World Airports spokesman Charles Paunzio.
FlyAway service will still operate out of Westwood, Long Beach, Hollywood, Union Station, Van Nuys and the Orange Line’s Woodley Station.

The “Beach Pantry,” stocked with caed beans, soups, grape juice and other goods, is a new resource at Cal State Long Beach for students who find themselves unable to cover the combined costs of study and meals.
The pantry has been open since the Aug. 22 begiing of the campus’ fall term. Cal State Long Beach’s student govement, with help from a Lakewood charity called Food Finders, created the stash of nonperishable foods for students enduring short- or long-term difficulties.
Food insecurity is actually a fairly widespread problem on Cal State University campuses; university officials reported in February that some 23 percent of students within the Cal State system experience food insecurity while in college.
“We do need something like a food pantry, or a model that is more sustainable for students who are food insecure,” said Logan Vouas, vice president of Associated Students, Inc., or ASI, which is the Long Beach campus’ student govement.

SACRAMENTO >> With a midnight deadline looming, Gov. Jerry Brown and the Legislature’s top Democrats on Wednesday struck a deal to spend nearly $1 billion in fees collected from the state’s biggest polluters on programs to boost public transit and put more electric cars on the road by giving huge vehicle rebates to poor people.
The spending blueprint was one of dozens of items lawmakers approved and sent to Brown on their last day of work for the year. They also endorsed measures that would expand unpaid family leave for some small business workers, require developers to install water meters in all new apartments and declare denim the official state fabric.
Several other bills — including measures that would have legalized inteet poker, placed a $3 billion affordable housing bond on a future ballot and expanded parents’ access to students’ sex education curricula — were defeated or shelved for the year because of a lack of support.

SANTA ANA >> Angels star outfielder Mike Trout was not injured in a car accident on the 55 Freeway Wednesday night.
The Orange County Fire Authority responded to a pair of separate but related crashes each involving two vehicles at 8:50 p.m. in the southbound lane of the 55 Freeway at McFadden Avenue, Capt. Larry Kurtz said.
Emergency persoel had to cut one person from a vehicle using the Jaws of Life, Kurtz said. Two people were injured. One victim went to Hoag Hospital and the other was transported to Orange County Global Medical Center, Kurtz said.
Photos from the scene showed a white Chevy Sonic and a black Mercedes sedan with damage.
Information about their medical conditions was unknown, and Kurtz could not say whether one of the victims was Trout.
Trout’s agent, Craig Landis, and Angels general manager Billy Eppler both confirmed Trout was OK and a Register photographer at the scene captured images of Trout outside of a vehicle seemingly unhurt.

The mother of Syed Rizwan Farook has denied in a court document that she had any knowledge and did not participate in the San Beardino Dec. 2 terrorist attack by Farook and wife Tashfeen Malik that killed 14 people and wounded 22.
Neither Rafia Farook nor her daughter Saira Khan took took part “in any way with the tragic attack,” the court document said.
The statement was included in a claim of interest filed Wednesday in federal court for the $280,756.17 in life insurance benefits left behind by Syed Farook, who died with Malik in a shootout with law enforcement a few hours after the deadly, Islamic State-inspired attack.
The disputed money has not been paid out. It is in the custody of the U.S. District Court Clerk.
The Justice Department has said the money is subject to civil forfeiture as “assets derived from a federal crime of terrorism,” according to a May 31 complaint. It has said the money should go to the families of victims and the survivors.

The fire buing in the Cherry Valley area was slightly bigger and further contained Wednesday moing, but firefighters remain conceed that winds and dry fuel could cause the blaze to explode.

“With any hot spots, that wind change is always a conce,” said Cal Fire Capt. Liz Brown adding that 20-mph wind gusts are expected throughout the day.
Most of the vegetation buing is a combination of chaparral and short grasses, and it’s those tinder-dry grasses that are worrisome for fire officials.
The Bogart fire, named for the park it started in, covered 1,250 acres and was about 20 percent contained by sunrise, officials said.
Evacuations southeast and northwest of Bogart Park took effect shortly after the fire ignited at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday. They were lifted about 9 p.m.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — For one day, a mother says, she didn’t have to worry about her autistic son eating lunch by himself.
A small gesture of kindness by Florida State University wide receiver Travis Rudolph — captured in a photo and shared on Facebook — had tears streaming down the face of the sixth-grader’s mother, Leah Paske.
“I’m not sure what exactly made this incredibly kind man share a lunch table with my son, but I’m happy to say it will not soon be forgotten,” she wrote. “This is one day I didn’t have to worry if my sweet boy ate lunch alone, because he sat across from someone who is a hero in many eyes.”
Rudolph was among several FSU players visiting Montford Middle School in Tallahassee Tuesday when he saw Bo Paske sitting alone in the cafeteria, grabbed a slice of pizza and asked if he could join him.

LOS ANGELES — A taxpayer lawsuit will be filed today against the city of Los Angeles alleging an unlawful “gift of public funds” to the Los Angeles Rams in the form of security at home games.
The lawsuit will be filed by former Los Angeles City Councilmember Deis Zine and Los Angeles resident James Bibeau “to prevent the city from expending any additional taxpayer funds to provide over 200 LAPD officers free of charge to secure Rams home games,” according to a statement from the Los Angeles Police Protective League.
“Rams owner Stan Kroenke has refused to pay in full for the police services necessary to ensure public safety at his team’s home games,” the statement said. “This free use of LAPD persoel constitutes an illegal gift of $2 million in public funds.”

EVERETT, Wash. >> In a surprise move, Donald Trump will travel to Mexico on Wednesday to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto, just hours before the Republican delivers a highly anticipated speech on immigration.
Trump took to Twitter on Tuesday night to say he looks “very much forward” to meeting with the Mexican leader. Pena Nieto’s office confirmed the meeting with its own tweet, saying the two men would meet privately.
The unexpected trip comes as Trump seeks to clarify his stand on illegal immigration, a contentious issue that has been a centerpiece of his Republican presidential campaign. Trump has long called for deporting people currently living in the U.S. illegally and building a wall along the country’s border with Mexico.

A man dubbed the “Baggy Eyes Bandit,” arrested by police Saturday during an attempted bank heist in Anaheim Hills, has been granted bond, according to the FBI.
Artur Stepanyan, 29, of Van Nuys, was charged Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles with two bank robberies. During the hearing, a federal magistrate granted Stepanyan bond.
Stepanyan was arrested Saturday afteoon by Anaheim police after he attempted to rob a Citibank at 5677 E. La Palma Ave., in Anaheim Hills, the FBI said.
Since February, the “Baggy Eyes Bandit” has been linked by authorities to six bank robberies in Los Angeles, Riverside, San Beardino and Orange counties.
The FBI alleges that on the afteoon of March 4, he entered a Citibank on Kraemer Boulevard in Placentia, handed a note to a teller demanding cash and claimed that he had a gun, according to an FBI complaint affidavit.

Suspended USC linebacker Osa Masina is under investigation by the Cottonwood Heights police department in Utah for an alleged sexual assault, a spokesman confirmed Tuesday.
The investigation was first reported by a Fox affiliate television station in Salt Lake City.
The alleged incident occurred in Salt Lake County in July.
USC coach Clay Helton aounced on Monday that Masina would not travel with the Trojans for their season opener on Saturday against top-ranked Alabama in Arlington, Texas, due to an unspecified violation of team rules.
Investigators from the Los Angeles police department were on campus last week and confirmed they are working with Cottonwood Heights police and on their own investigation.
Cottonwood Height Police Sgt. Dan Bartlett said he met with Masina on campus for an hour last week and a search warrant had been issued.
Masina, a sophomore, finished with 25 tackles and a fumble retu for a touchdown in 12 games last season.

BIG BEAR LAKE >> A magnitude-3.4 earthquake was reported Tuesday moing in the Big Bear area, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The shaker was reported at 7:25 a.m., almost 20 miles north northeast of the mountain community.

TARZANA >> Los Angeles police responded to Chris Brown’s residence in Tarzana Tuesday and later served a search warrant on the home as the singer took to social media to deny any wrongdoing and to condemn police.
At a news conference Tuesday afteoon, LAPD Lt. Chris Ramirez said police were serving a search warrant on the home, and an unknown number of people were exiting the residence. The house is located in a posh, hillside neighborhood of one-and two-story homes that are nearly all protected by locked iron gates.
A call initially came at 3:11 a.m. from the 5000 block of Corbin Avenue, police said earlier.
“It came out as a female requesting help,” Officer Drake Madison of LAPD’s Media Relations Section said about the call. “Our Robbery/Homicide Division is handling that, and they are on scene.”

A man in his 40s was shot to death early Tuesday moing in Long Beach’s Zaferia neighborhood, according to authorities.
Officers responded to the 1600 block of Hile Avenue around 4:45 a.m. when they got a call about a shooting that had just happened and ended with someone lying in the street, police said.
When they arrived, officers found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, Long Beach police spokesman Sgt. Brad Johnson said.
The man was unresponsive, according to police.
A Long Beach Fire Department crew determined the man was dead, Johnson said.
Police said the shooting is still under investigation, and it’s unclear at this point if it was gang-related.
No arrests have been made. The name of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin.

An estimated 75,000 students will retu to classes in Long Beach Unified today, and police are urging motorists and pedestrians to be safe out on the road.
Drivers, police say: Yield the right of way to pedestrians in crosswalks, do not pass cars that are stopped for pedestrians, obey speed limits, stop for school buses with red lights flashing and don’t drive distracted.
Pedestrians: Yield to vehicles if you are outside the crosswalk, and do not cross between intersections controlled by traffic signals.
And finally, parents: Do not double park in front of school, follow school drop-off procedures, and teach your child to always cross the street at a crosswalk.
